Uptime / Critical Power & Cooling

Built Exclusively on Vertiv™

From the first rack to the whole room.

Uptime specifies Critical Power & Cooling entirely on Vertiv™ equipment — the same UPS, power distribution and precision cooling platforms running the world’s data centers, sized down to the network closet and up to the facility. One vendor, one parts list, one call for service.

Why one vendor

Vertiv™ is our only partner in this category — on purpose.

A rack UPS, a facility UPS, and the cooling above them all need to speak the same protocol and fail over the same way. We standardized Critical Power & Cooling on one manufacturer so the pieces are designed to work together, the spare parts interchange across your fleet, and there’s a single number to call when something needs attention — ours, and Vertiv™’s factory support behind it.

  • Liebert® UPS, PDU, and static transfer switches — one electrical platform
  • CoolPhase™ precision cooling, sized from a single closet to a full building
  • Factory warranty and a nationwide Vertiv™ field service network
Critical Power & Cooling

Start with the UPS

The most-requested piece first, then everything it needs.

Nine in ten quotes in this category start with a UPS question, so that’s where we start too. Vertiv™’s Liebert® line covers the same three tiers whether you’re protecting a single network rack or an entire facility — we size the unit to your load, not the other way around.

Network & Edge Tier — Vertiv™ Liebert® GXT5

Rack-level protection that doesn’t take up rack space you need.

The Liebert® GXT5 is a lithium-ion, online double-conversion UPS built for the network closet, the edge site, or the single rack that can’t go down — a control room switch stack, a security head-end, a local server. Lithium-ion cells run cooler, last longer, and take up meaningfully less footprint than the legacy VRLA unit they replace, and the unit reports state of health back to your monitoring platform so a battery replacement is scheduled, not discovered.

Facility Tier — Vertiv™ Liebert® APM2 UL

Add capacity as the room grows — not before you need it.

The Liebert® APM2 is a modular, three-phase UPS for the server room or mid-size facility that expects to grow. Power modules are hot-swappable, front-accessible, and add in place, so a facility can start at the load it has today and scale toward 600 kW without re-specifying the room or taking a planned outage to do it.

Capacity

10–600 kW, modular

Best fit

Server rooms and mid-size facilities planning to grow

Large-Scale Tier — Vertiv™ Liebert® EXL S1

Where the whole facility rides on one bus.

The Liebert® EXL S1 is a transformer-based, three-phase UPS built for data center and large-campus scale — the tier where a single unit protects the whole building, not one room in it. It’s engineered for sustained high-load efficiency and for the redundant, parallel configurations that large facilities specify as standard.

Capacity

250–1,200 kW

Best fit

Data centers and campus-scale facilities

Critical Power & Cooling

Between the UPS and the load

Getting protected power where it needs to go — and keeping it there.

A UPS is only half the answer. Vertiv™’s distribution and continuity gear moves that protected power from the battery room to the floor, and keeps it flowing if a utility feed or a UPS itself needs to come off line.

Cooling that scales with the room

Four tiers, one CoolPhase™ platform.

Heat is a byproduct of every watt the UPS protects, and it has to go somewhere. Vertiv™’s CoolPhase™ and SwitchAir™ lines cover the same four tiers as the UPS lineup — a single rack, a row, a room, and the whole facility — so cooling capacity grows in step with power capacity instead of getting re-specified at every stage.

Row Tier — Vertiv™ CoolPhase™ Row

Cold air that travels inches, not across the room.

CoolPhase™ Row units sit in the rack row itself, drawing hot exhaust from the aisle behind and returning conditioned air directly in front of the racks that need it. Because the cooling source sits where the heat is generated, a room can run at meaningfully higher rack density than perimeter cooling alone supports, without hot spots forming between units.

Capacity

30–40 kW per unit

Best fit

Dense rack rows, colocation, high-density computing

Room Tier — Vertiv™ CoolPhase™ Wall

Precision cooling for the room that doesn’t have a raised floor.

Most server rooms outside a purpose-built data center don’t have a raised floor or central plant to tie into — they have a wall. CoolPhase™ Wall units mount directly to it, giving a converted office, a school’s network closet, or a hospital’s IT room dedicated precision cooling with humidity control, without ductwork or construction.

Capacity

11 kW

Best fit

Converted rooms, no raised floor or central plant

Common questions

Critical Power & Cooling FAQs.

Why only Vertiv™ in this category?

The UPS, distribution and cooling all have to interoperate and fail over together, and one manufacturer’s parts and monitoring platform do that more reliably than a mixed fleet. Vertiv™ is also the only partner we carry in Data Center Infrastructure, so a facility standardizing on both categories stays on one vendor end to end.

How do I know which UPS tier I need?

Start with what you’re protecting: a single rack or network closet points to the GXT5 tier, a server room or growing facility points to APM2, and a data center or campus load points to EXL S1. Send us your load and we’ll size it — most quotes in this category start with exactly that question.

Do I need a static transfer switch if I already have redundant UPS?

If any load in the room is single-corded — one power input, not two — an STS2 lets it draw from two independent UPS sources without you rewiring the device. Dual-corded equipment can usually skip it.

Does the cooling tier have to match the UPS tier?

Not exactly — cooling is sized to heat load, not UPS capacity. A dense rack row on a mid-size UPS can still need row-level cooling. We size airflow separately, then check it against your power plan.

Is battery energy storage (BESS) right for every facility?

It depends on your utility rate structure and demand charges. It’s worth evaluating any time you’re already sizing a large UPS, since the battery infrastructure overlaps — but it’s an add-on, not a requirement.

What does Data Center Infrastructure cover that this category doesn’t?

Critical Power & Cooling covers the power path and thermal management. Racks, enclosures, modular data center builds and monitoring software live in Data Center Infrastructure — see that category for the physical layer.

Tell us your load. We’ll size the tier.

A voltage, a kVA or kW figure, and a sense of the room is enough to start — we’ll come back with a Vertiv™ configuration sized to your facility, not a catalog default.
